2nd
place: The New Word by Cuba Ukoh – Jos,
Nigeria.
Judges’
Comments:
Watching and Hoping – Efembe Eke
An impressively powerful glimpse into the
persistence of hope in the face of ineffectuality, as the narrator yearns for
the woman she fails to divert from her chosen course. The depth of her
emotion and her heedlessness are skilfully realised. This is writing
exemplifying respect for the reader.
The New
Word – Cuba Ukoh
Written with admirable simplicity, this story
has great charm, despite its theme of disillusionment and eventual cynicism and
opportunism, as a small boy adjusts to his changed circumstances following the
divorce of his parents. It engages the reader from start to finish.
